Frequently Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about our AI whiteboard tutoring, AP Calculus AB curriculum, score projections, and subscriptions.
What is Athena, and how is it different from watching videos or using ChatGPT?
Athena is an AI-powered AP Calculus AB prep coach built with cognitive science principles. Unlike passive YouTube lectures where you nod along without retaining skills, Athena forces active practice. And unlike generic chatbots that simply vomit the final answer, Athena uses a Socratic method: it teaches on an interactive visual whiteboard, catches subtle algebraic pitfalls before they become habits, and never does the thinking for you.
How does the 7-day free trial work? Is a credit card required?
No credit card is required. You can sign up with your email and immediately get full access to all 8 AP Calculus units, the AI whiteboard tutor, and practice exams. If you love it, you can upgrade to the Athena Membership ($29/month or $180/year) before your trial ends.
How much time should I spend on Athena each day?
Just 15 to 20 minutes a day. Athena's adaptive engine curates a bounded set of daily problems specifically tailored to your weakest subskills (weighted 60% weak spots / 30% mid-tier / 10% stretch). Deliberate, consistent daily practice is proven to outperform frantic weekend cramming.
Can I use Athena if I am currently struggling or behind in class?
Absolutely. Athena is designed specifically for students feeling lost in high school calculus. Our initial diagnostic identifies exactly where your foundation cracked (whether it's chain rule, limit definitions, or trigonometry algebra) and builds your confidence up step by step.
Is Athena aligned with the official 2026 College Board AP Calculus AB curriculum?
Yes. 100% of our content, unit weightings, learning objectives, and skill categories match the College Board Course and Exam Description (CED). We cover all 8 Units: Limits & Continuity, Derivative Rules, Implicit & Inverse Differentiation, Contextual Rates, Analytical Optimization & MVT, Integration & FTC, Differential Equations, and Area & Volume Applications.
Does Athena cover both Multiple Choice (MCQ) and Free Response (FRQ)?
Yes. Athena includes over 1,800 AP-style multiple choice questions and extensive free-response problem sets. For FRQs, Athena breaks down solutions into official College Board rubric points so you know exactly which justifications earn credit and which trigger point deductions.
Does Athena practice both Calculator and No-Calculator sections?
Yes. Every problem in Athena is tagged as either Calculator Active or No Calculator, mirroring the official exam structure. We teach you when a numerical integral approximation is expected vs. when an exact symbolic analytical antiderivative is required.
How does the live AI whiteboard tutoring work?
When you start a micro-lesson or get stuck on a practice problem, Athena takes over an interactive digital whiteboard. Instead of reading walls of text, you see math written in clean LaTeX, terms highlighted with operation color-coding (like blue for unknowns and amber for operations), coordinate graphs sketched, and step-by-step substitutions animated.
What happens when I get a question wrong?
On your first wrong answer, Athena offers an encouraging nudge and an inline hint that points to the core theorem without giving the game away. On a second wrong attempt, Athena initiates a friendly tutor takeover, talking through where your reasoning diverged and guiding you to self-correct.
How does Athena project my official 1–5 AP score?
Athena uses a calibrated psychometric scoring engine trained on historical AP score distributions. By taking full mock exams and logging accuracy across unit weights, Athena projects your current standing on the 1–5 scale (e.g. 3.8 / 5) and shows how many additional correct points you need to reach a guaranteed 5.
When should I take the full practice exam?
We recommend taking a baseline diagnostic when you first join, a midterm check-in after Unit 5, and full timed practice exams every two weeks during the final two months before the May AP test.
Can I cancel anytime? How easy is it?
You can cancel in literally two clicks from your Account settings. Your access will continue until the end of your current billing cycle with no cancellation penalties, hidden fees, or retention phone calls.
Do you offer group discounts for teachers or high schools?
Yes! We work with high school AP teachers, math departments, and school districts to provide student bulk licenses and educator dashboards with automated homework grading. Contact our education team at schools@athenaprep.com.
What devices and browsers does Athena support?
Athena runs entirely in your web browser with zero software installations. It works smoothly on desktop computers, laptops, Chromebooks, iPads, and smartphones. All your progress syncs instantly in the cloud.
